Some of you are probably familiar with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, recurring characters on the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon who bear an uncanny resemblance to a couple DC characters near and dear to our hearts.

Well ... yesterday I picked up a copy of the new Spongebob comic book (part of the NICK MAG PRESENTS series) for my niece and started flipping through the issue. And I was stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted the unmistakable art of Ramona Fradon ... on a three-page Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy story!

Needless to say, this was a very cool surprise, part of an issue that has an unusual amount of DC references in it, including mentions of YOUNG LOVE and SUGAR & SPIKE and a write-up on Ultra, the Multi-Alien. And several comic strip take-offs on features like TERRY & THE PIRATES and George Herriman's THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS, stuff that most adults won't recognize let alone kids. Bill Nolan gets a thank you in the credits for his research help.

Anyway, until someone taps Ms. Fradon to draw a new Aquaman & Aqualad story, this is probably as close as we're going to get. I doubt that most comics shops will have this one so you'll want to start checking the magazine section at the book store or Wal-Mart or wherever to find it.

Good luck!

Really...wow. I have almost no idea what that could be for. Did they reprint the "Super-Zeroes" articles from Nick Magazine? I helped out with some art and some research for those in 2000 and 2001. I'll have to pick up the Sponge Bob book since I'm mentioned.

Thanks for the heads up!
- Bill

["Did they reprint the "Super-Zeroes" articles from Nick Magazine?"]

As a matter of fact, a two-page "Super-Zeroes" article immediately follows the Mermaid Man story, with bits on Ultra, Razorback, Tomboy and others.
